Which Direction? One Direction of Course.

Devastated, heartbroken, disgusted, angry, outraged. These are some of the words used in a recent report on a well-known news site (you know the one, run by the Broken Biscuit Company).

Obviously a catastrophic event had occurred somewhere in the world for such an outpouring of adjectives. So was it an Earthquake, or maybe a volcanic eruption on the proportions of Krakatoa?  Could it be an alien invasion with millions being eaten alive, or perhaps  a disease of epidemic proportions?

No.  None of the above. One Direction cancelled a performance because of ill health. Those words at the beginning described the feelings of the fans leaving the auditorium when it was announced at the last minute the performance could not go ahead,  because band member Liam Payne fell ill.

The most appropriate word to use is disappointed. Yes I ‘m sure  many of the audience had looked forward to it for a long time, but let’s put this in perspective. You were not devastated. When your family has been killed in a road accident, then you can be devastated.

Heartbroken, well maybe at that age you could be heartbroken, but it will mend, and believe me, there will be plenty more heart-breaking moments in your life. If the cancellation of a concert is the worst you get then you are very fortunate indeed.

Disgusted, angry and outraged. Why?  Because someone couldn’t perform?  Or because they tried their damnedest to make the show go on, but realised it just wasn’t going to work and made the decision to cancel at the last minute, rather than collapse on stage or throw up over the front row? How selfish was Liam? Not at all. It showed commitment to his fans, even when ill he hoped  to appear. Much more commendable than the Rolling Stones, who cancelled an entire UK tour for tax purposes.

There ‘s an attitude in the world these days that no one should have to suffer disappointment. Well I’ve got news for you. It ain’t going to happen. You will suffer many disappointments. That’s life.

These angry, disgusted and outraged fans only thought of themselves. They didn’t get what they wanted and the world must know. Meanwhile, Liam, who was ill remember, still thought of the fans, but sometimes nature tells us, no you can’t do that. Go and lie down. A last minute cancellation is not selfish, it’s a sign of someone who cares. Did the fans care about his health? I’ll leave you to judge.

I’m not a One Direction fan, but I do admire someone who did their best to perform, even if, in the end, they couldn’t. Good luck lads, and all the best for the future.
